Moving from Tally to Spanr

You can move from Tally Prime to Spanr in an afternoon: export your masters from Tally as XML, preview the import, then import groups, ledgers, GST details, opening balances and pending bills in one step. Items and opening stock come from an Excel template.

Updated 31 October 2026

1. Export masters from Tally

  1. In Tally Prime, open the company and go to Gateway of Tally → Export → Masters.
  2. Choose XML as the format and include all masters.
  3. Save the file.

2. Preview, then import

In Spanr, open Getting started and choose Import from Tally. Pick the file and run the preview. The preview saves nothing and lists what would be created, with a note for anything it had to leave out. When the counts look right, import.

3. What comes across

From TallyIn Spanr
GroupsCreated under the same parent. Tally's primary groups already exist in Spanr's chart, so new primary groups are skipped.
Ledgers and opening balancesCreated with their opening balance as Dr or Cr. An existing ledger such as Cash takes Tally's opening only if its own is zero.
GST and contact detailsRegistration type, GSTIN, state, address, PIN code, phone, PAN and credit days. Details that fail validation are dropped with a note; the ledger still comes in.
Bill-wise opening balancesPending bills on Sundry Debtors and Sundry Creditors, with due dates from their credit period, when they add up to the opening balance.
Profit & Loss A/cNot imported as a ledger; its opening appears as the difference in opening balances.

4. Items and opening stock

Download the Excel template from the same page. It has one column per price level and a sheet of units. Fill in items and opening quantities for one branch (up to 5,000 rows), check the file, then import. If any row has an error, nothing is saved and the rows are listed with the reason.

5. Check the Trial Balance

Open the Trial Balance as on the first day of your books and compare it with Tally's. A difference in opening balances means a ledger or an opening is missing from the export.

Questions

Asked by owners like you

Will my Tally opening balances match?

Yes, when the export is complete. Ledgers come in with their opening balances, and the Trial Balance shows any difference in opening balances the way Tally does, so you can see at once if something is missing.

Are pending bills brought across?

Yes. Bill-wise opening allocations on debtors and creditors become pending bills, as long as they add up to the ledger's opening balance, as Tally itself requires.

Can I import twice?

Yes. Names that already exist are not created again, so a second import only adds what is new.

Do I need to stop using Tally on the same day?

No. Many businesses run both for a month, then move fully once the Trial Balances agree.
